In 1984 David Crossley asked WIRG if some aerial views of ironworking ponds could be obtained for possible use as illustrations in his and Henry Cleere’s book, The Iron Industry of the Weald, which was then in preparation. The late Tony Weaver, a WIRG member who also had a private pilot’s licence, volunteered his services and he and Jeremy Hodgkinson flew over the Weald in Tony’s light aircraft photographing a selection of ponds. The image of Sheffield Furnace pond was subsequently used in the book.
